Halloween Candy — Be Smart About It

Every Halloween I hear the excuse of “I can treat myself, I have a low blood sugar” in order to eat some of our children’s candy. And as benign as that sounds, it bothers me!!! Why would it bother me, you ask? Why not give us people with diabetes a break???

Well… because, why not just be honest? Just allow yourself the pieces of candy you want, in small amounts, and in moderation? Why claim it’s for a low blood sugar?

For starters — THAT IS NOT HOW YOU TREAT LOW BLOOD SUGAR! NO!

Do NOT treat low blood sugar with chocolate, pastries, or junk food that has something other than sugar in it, like fat, or protein. Actual low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia is DANGEROUS! When a person quickly starts dropping below 70 mg/dL, they need fast acting glucose in order to come back to normal. Chocolate and pastries are NOT fast acting because protein and fat take a long time to digest. You can quickly drop down to dangerous levels while waiting on chocolate or pastries to do their trick. Meanwhile, you’ll have consumed a LOT more carbohydrates than you needed, and ended up with high blood sugar.

If you need to treat a low blood glucose, have fast acting glucose sources. So — steal your kids’ Smarties (the American kind), Sweet Tarts, jelly beans, Skittles, and hard candy. Skip the chocolate, the ho-hos, etc.

You can have your Halloween candy — but don’t misinform yourself, and others, on how to treat your low blood sugar. It might end up harming you later…
