That may sound like the beginning of a political opinion piece, but let me quickly assure you it is not. This is, after all, an article for Type2Diabetes.com. So, while I do want to help you be more sensitive, it’s your sensitivity to insulin that’s most important to me regardless of your politics.

Why is insulin sensitivity important?

I’ll direct you to my post from November 2015 titled What Goes Up, Must Come Down – Or Not for a thorough review, but the quick answer is that type 2 diabetes is literally defined by progressive insulin “insensitivity” (insulin resistance). That is, cells which normally respond to insulin’s “message” to take excess glucose out of the blood for storage are less responsive – insensitive. That means blood glucose levels remain too high, blood insulin levels remain too high, and cells don’t have an appropriate store of fuel. Over time, these conditions may damage blood vessels and nerves, promote obesity, and even exhaust the pancreas’ insulin production capacity. Without intervention, it’s a downward spiral. Insulin sensitivity is extraordinarily important.

Improve your insulin sensitivity

So, if I told you that YOU can improve YOUR insulin sensitivity wouldn’t you be anxious to give it a try? Well, you can, and really all it takes is a commitment to exercise. Yes, physical activity is part of diabetes self-management for a reason – exercise can increase insulin sensitivity. A combination of aerobic and resistance (with weights or bands) works best, but any kind of physical activity is beneficial – you don’t need a gym membership, you don’t need three hours a day, and you don’t need yoga pants.

All you need to know can be found in this search for “exercise” on type2diabetes.com. It’s never too late to start, and any is better than none – make the commitment to be more sensitive.
